Do I need a referral to see a prosthetist for dentures?

No referrals are generally not required. Often, if the treatment of your teeth is complex, your dentist may write a referral to better explain your situation. We work with many dentists in Boronia and the surrounding Melbourne Eastern Suburbs.

How much do dentures cost?

The cost of dentures can differ depending on your needs and the type of denture you would prefer. Our dental prosthetist can talk you through the different options available and the cost of each of these options.

Will Medicate cover the cost of my dentures?

Medicare does not currently provide any benefits or rebates for dentures.

Will my denture teeth look natural?

Yes, we will work with you to achieve the appearance you desire. We understand sometimes a “perfect smile” is not what you are after. Talk to us about any aesthetic concerns you may have. No two dentures are the same as we craft each denture precisely to meet our patients’ individual needs. During the different stages during the construction of your dentures, you are able to assess how they will look and feel before your dentures are finalised to ensure you are satisfied with the outcome.

Is it possible for a denture to replace just one missing tooth?

Yes, dentures are customised to each individual to replace one or many teeth. Refer to our flexible partial dentures blog post for more information on the replacement of one to two teeth.

How long will it take for my new dentures to settle in?

The settling time of dentures can vary from one individual to another, but a general guide is between 6 to 8 weeks.

Will my speech be affected?

Wearing dentures for the first time is a learning curve. There are many things you are going to need to practice and master, and speaking is one. When you assess your teeth at the try-in visit, your dental Prosthetist will go through a speech test with you to confirm the clarity of your speech. However, you may experience some lisping initially, but it shouldn’t take long for your tongue and lips to adjust to return to your usual speech patterns.

How often should I replace my dentures?

You should visit your prosthetist to have your dentures checked at least once every 2 years and replace them between 5 to 8 years. As you wear your dentures, your bone and gums will continue to change shape. Since dentures are artificial teeth, they will not adapt to the shape of your mouth after some years. You will need to get the dentures adjusted or replaced. This can be done easily by organising an appointment with our friendly staff.

Can I eat normally with dentures?

Dentures replace natural teeth, but they do not feel or work the same way. Adjusting to eating with dentures takes practice and perseverance. You may have some difficulty at first as you have habitually chewed in a particular way. Chewing efficiency with dentures is significantly less than with your natural teeth. Additionally, dentures are not fixed like teeth in your jaws, you will notice some minute movements of your dentures when eating and chewing, depending on the type of food being consumed. Over time you should be able to return to your normal diet with a few exceptions.

How often should I clean my dentures?

It is important that you look after your dentures as you would your natural teeth. Dentures must be kept clean to avoid inflamed gums, infections, and further loss of natural teeth.
We recommend you clean your dentures twice daily and rinse them after eating where necessary. Make sure you remove your dentures for cleaning and also gently brush your gums to stimulate blood circulation.
