Learning to Eat with New Dentures: Tips for a Smooth Transition

Getting new dentures can be exciting and daunting at the same time. Adapting to eating with dentures may initially pose some challenges. At The False Tooth Fairy Denture Clinic, we understand that the first few weeks of wearing dentures can be a learning process. In this blog, we will share some tips and insights to help you navigate the transition and enjoy eating with your new dentures.

  1. Start Slowly:

It’s essential to be patient with yourself during the initial days of wearing dentures. Begin with soft and easy-to-chew foods to gradually get used to the feeling of your new dentures in your mouth. Soups, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, steamed fish and yoghurt are excellent choices during this phase. You may notice a slight reduction in your ability to taste due to the dentures covering some surfaces in the mouth.

  1. Cut Food into Smaller Pieces:

To make eating with dentures more manageable, cut your food into smaller, bite-sized pieces. This reduces the stress on your dentures and gums, and allows for easier chewing and swallowing.

  1. Chew Slowly and Evenly:

Take your time while eating and chew your food slowly and evenly on both sides of your mouth. Chewing slowly not only helps you adjust to the dentures but also aids digestion and prevents discomfort. You may experience some cheek biting initially as you get used to the positioning of the false teeth.

  1. Avoid Sticky or Hard Foods:

In the early stages of adapting to dentures, it’s best to avoid sticky or hard foods, such as caramel candies or tough meats. These types of foods can dislodge dentures or cause unnecessary strain on them.

  1. Use Both Sides of Your Mouth:

Distribute the pressure evenly on both sides of your mouth while chewing. This will prevent the dentures from becoming unstable and ensure they stay securely in place.

  1. Avoid Extremely Hot Foods:

Be cautious when consuming hot foods and liquids, as your ability to gauge temperature accurately may be affected initially. Start with lukewarm or cooler options until you become more comfortable with eating hot foods.

  1. Avoid Crunching Ice or Hard Objects:

Crunching on ice or biting down on hard objects can be harmful to your dentures and natural teeth (if any). Refrain from such habits to extend the longevity of your dentures.

  1. Use Denture Adhesive (if recommended):

If your dental prosthetist or dentist advises the use of denture adhesive, follow their instructions carefully. Denture adhesives can enhance the stability of your dentures and provide extra confidence during meals in certain cases.

  1. Stay Hydrated:

Keep yourself hydrated while eating by taking small sips of water between bites. Staying hydrated is not only essential for overall health but also helps maintain the moisture in your mouth, making wearing dentures more comfortable.

  1. Gradually Introduce Challenging Foods:

As you gain confidence in eating with your dentures, gradually introduce slightly more challenging foods. Incorporate soft vegetables, well-cooked meats, and other favourite foods into your diet. This gradual progression will allow you to adapt to various textures and enjoy a diverse range of meals.

  1. Attend Regular Check-ups:

Regular check-ups with your dental prosthetist are crucial during the adjustment period. They will assess the fit of your dentures, make any necessary adjustments, and provide guidance on improving your eating experience.

Learning to eat with new dentures is a gradual process that requires patience and practice. By following these tips and staying consistent with your denture care routine, you’ll soon find that eating with dentures becomes second nature. Remember, our denture clinic is here to support you throughout this transition.
